This website is owned, hosted and operated by the University of Alberta (hereafter referred to as “the University”).

This website contains photographs and/or images (collectively the "Content") that are owned by the University of Alberta.

It is illegal to duplicate, download or distribute any Content from this site except for your use, and you are subject to the Terms of Use.

Access to the Content and the ability to download Content does not imply permission for use or re-use. The images on this site are low-resolution files and may carry watermarks or other embedded data. To obtain: high-resolution files suitable for publications and other printed media; watermark-free images; or written permission to publish or otherwise use these images, please contact Creative Services, University of Alberta.

Terms of Use

Your use of this website (hereinafter referred to as “site”) means you agree to the following terms of use (the "Terms of Use").

Any Content downloaded by you from this site is providing permission to you by the University to use the Content according to the Terms of Use. Downloading the Content does not transfer license or title to the Content, or any intellectual property rights therein, to you. You may not redistribute or sell the Content.

Provision of high-resolution and/or watermark-free Content may be subject to administrative and/or copyright fees, as assessed by Creative Services, University of Alberta.

Permitted Uses of Content:

You may, as a member of the University of Alberta,           

  • Back up, and store, single Content as necessary on a single server for archival, tracking or asset management purposes only. Any copy or archive you make must include the copyright notice “© University of Alberta”;
  • Use the Content in any electronic or print media, including advertising and editorial use, provided such use is not intended to allow the re-distribution or re-use of the Content;
  • Use the Content as design elements in video, film, or television broadcasts;
  • Modify or alter the Content as necessary for your use, provided that if such modification or alteration constitutes a derivative work, the rights to all such derivative works shall belong exclusively to the University of Alberta, and that you shall only use such derivative work in accordance with these Terms of Use. If requested by the University, you agree to execute a written assignment of any such rights, including copyrights, at no cost to the University;
  • Use the Content for any other purposes only as approved in writing by the University.

Prohibited Uses of Content:

You may not

  • Use the Content in any items for personal use or resale, including book covers, calendars, consumer merchandise (T-shirts, posters, art, etc.), especially if such use is intended to allow the re-distribution or re-use of the Content;
  • Use the Content as décor in an office, lobby, or public area, unless you have received written permission from the University;
  • Sublicense, distribute, transfer or assign the Content or rights to the Content;
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, translate, or disassemble any part of the Content;
  • Copy or reproduce the Content;
  • Remove any copyright, trademark or watermark from any place where it appears on the Content;
  • Display the Content in any digital format or for any digital use at a resolution greater than 72 dpi, except in editorial or preliminary design work. Doing so will be viewed as an attempt to distribute the Content in violation of these Terms of Use;
  • Use the Content, or any part of the Content, as part of a trademark, service mark, or logo. The University of Alberta retains the full rights to the Content, and therefore you cannot establish your own rights;
  • Use the Content in a product or service whereby the Content can be used apart from a product or service;
  • Use the Content in any downloadable format intended for multiple distribution including, without limitation, website templates, software products, e-greetings, electronic communications, etc. Written permission may be obtained for limited use in these formats by contacting the University;
  • Use the Content in any way that could be considered defamatory, pornographic, libelous, immoral, obscene or fraudulent, or illegal, either by making physical changes to it, in the juxtaposition to accompanying text or images, or otherwise.

The design or layout of any website owned, operated, licensed, or controlled by or associated with the University is protected by Canadian and International law and other intellectual property proprietary rights and may not be copied or imitated in whole or in part.

Except as provided in the Terms of Use, the University makes no representation or warranty with respect to the Content. The site is delivered “as is”. The University does not guarantee accuracy, correctness, reliability, merchantability, and fitness for a particular purpose, and does not warrant that the Content will be free from errors, interruptions, omissions, defects or possibly damaging elements. You assume costs of service, repairs or corrections to your hardware, software or other equipment.

In no event will the University or any of its affiliates, officers, directors, employees, licensors, suppliers or distributors be liable for any indirect, special, incidental, economic or consequential damages arising out of the use or inability to use the Content, if any, for accessing or using this site or downloading Content from this site.

These Terms of Use shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Province of Alberta, Canada. The University reserves the right to terminate this site without notice. All information in the Content, including the image and any embedded data, is protected by the Alberta Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPP) Act.

The University of Alberta reserves, at its discretion, the right to not permit use of any of the Content or to notify the user that certain Content is no longer available for use, and/or the right to replace the Content with alternative Content without notice.

All rights not expressly granted to the user in the Terms of Use are reserved solely for the University of Alberta.

The University requests and requires that the copyright notice “©” and the current year, followed by “University of Alberta” (ie. © 2006 University of Alberta) appears adjacent to the Content or on a credit page.
